Jiří Georg Dokoupil is considered one of the central figures of European contemporary painting since the early 1980s. Emerging from the Cologne-based artist group Mülheimer Freiheit, he developed an experimental practice that deliberately resists a fixed stylistic identity. His work is defined by the continuous exploration of painterly processes, materials, and technical methods.
Dokoupil is known for the use of unconventional media such as soot, spray paint, tire marks, and soap solution. The “Soap Bubble Paintings” presented in Mexico City are created by applying pigmented soap bubbles onto paper or canvas. Their surfaces are characterized by translucent structures, circular formations, and irregular color transitions.
The series combines controlled chemical processes with elements of chance. The resulting works operate between materiality and immateriality, producing visual spaces that appear both atmospheric and process-oriented. Dokoupil’s paintings do not primarily function as representation, but rather as physical traces of an experimental act.
